Welcome to the 6th Annual Revolver Advent Coffee Calendar

For those of you returning — welcome back. You know the drill!

First time? Welcome! Thanks for allowing us to join in on your December mornings.

In your hands, or on a counter nearby, you have the 2024 Revolver Advent Calendar. Inside are 24 boxes with 24 different coffees inside, that equal 24 cups of coffee, or 24 days. (Or 4 days’ worth, if you're like me).

Each day contains 20g of coffee, pre-portioned and unlabeled. No rules, but here's what we recommend:

  • Take notice of the bean color, shape, and size.
  • In each box you should have a tasting journal, if you want to be a real pro and test your palate, write down your thoughts on the coffee and any tasting notes you find before you look up the reveal online, and then compare them to what the roaster's wrote..
  • Coffee opens up as it cools. Observe the tasting notes that come through at different temperatures. A good coffee gets better as it cools and gets to that goldilocks sweet spot in-between too hot and too cold.
  • The 4 times to take notice of any given coffee, and the accompanying sense
    1. Sight: The appearance (color, shape, size).
    2. Smell: After you grind it.
    3. Smell: After you brew it.
    4. Taste: When you sip it.
  • For tasting notes, they can often seem fleeting, or just on the tip of your tongue but not quite there. Try and break it down at the highest altitude and continue to descend. For example, take a sip and think: Is this Fruity? Or Chocolatey? Or Nutty?
  • It's Fruity. Oh okay. What kind of fruit is it? A berry? A Stone Fruit? A whatever the Apple family is in fruit? A Berry you say? Great! A strawberry? Blueberry? Raspberry? Blackberry? Blackberry you say? Cool. Is it fresh? Ripe? Cooked / Stewed / Baked? Jammy? You see what I mean?

Brew Recipes / Tips

First — brew the way you normally do at home. This isn’t the time to experiment, so stick to what you enjoy.

That said, here’s how we’ll be brewing:

  • Use a scale for accuracy. We recommend a 1:16 ratio — 1g of coffee to 16g of water. With 20g of coffee, use 320g of water (320ml or 10.8oz).
  • Some prefer a 1:18 ratio — 360g of water (360ml or 12.17oz). Either works.
  • Brew at 205°F / 96°C. Use the same grind for all coffees.
  • We follow Scott Rao's recipes for their quality and consistency.
